With music venues across the nation closing their doors due to COVID-19, and thousands of concerts being cancelled or postponed, many musicians are turning to online streaming platforms to connect with and perform for their fans. This week, Dashboard Confessional performed a virtual concert for over 5000 fans and raised money for the Music Health Aliance. No concert is complete without a photobooth next to the merch table, so we used our new SmileBot service to customize and process selfies sent to us via text message. With limited promotion (just a few Instagram Story posts), we processed nearly 600 selfies.
We think that a text message based platform is ideal for a few reasons. First, phones have the best camera quality available to users (lets face it: webcams haven’t improved much since 2001). It also doesn’t require the users to navigate away from the stream they’re watching; they can keep the stream on their computer or TV screen and use their phone for photoboothing (it’s a word, trust us). Lastly and most importantly, it delivers the photo directly to the users phone so they can post easily and immediately to social media. No need to download and transfer the file from their computer.
